A Happy Family Cuckoo Clock by Adolf Herr

There’s a lot about cuckoo clocks that many people do not know. Not only do they keep track and tell time but they grace your home with beauty and elegance, and tell a story.

This clock is a typical Black Forest house and there are so many things that I find special about it.  It has the signature of Adolf Herr at the back which makes this clock even more authentic and something that I can value forever. In addition, it is more colorful as compared to other chalet-style cuckoo clocks that I have ever seen. Staring at this clock really makes me happy.

This 4-inch clock has an 8-day clock movement and needs to be wound once every week. I find it more convenient as compared to a 1-day clock movement that needs to be wound once every 24 hours.

Each cuckoo clock depicts a culture and tells a story. Some cuckoo clocks represent traditions and some depict the everyday life of people in the Black Forest, just like this one, which shows a family enjoying life.

Another thing that I like about this clock is that all the figurines are moving and it is fun watching each of them moves.  Kids playing on the seesaw, parents sitting on the bench, and dancers on the balcony move and twirl once the music starts playing.

Cuckoo clocks with two weights do not produce any music. This clock has three suspended pine-cone shape weights which means it plays music. I love seeing the figurines dance and twirl to the music but I love the music that plays in the background every hour more. This is definitely something I always look forward to every hour.

Hönes – A Piece of Art Cuckoo Clock

Hönes is one of the best-known and long-standing cuckoo clock manufacturers in the Black Forest. It was founded in the year 1950 by Daniel Hönes and in 1984, it was later taken over by Trenkle, which is also known for producing high-quality cuckoo clocks.

There is a wide selection of clocks as they offer more than 400 different models from traditionally Hand-carved,  Chalet style to cutting-edge modern clocks, and personally, I prefer their Chalet-style cuckoo clocks. Chalet-style clocks can vary from a Black Forest House, Swiss Alpine House, and  Bavarian Beer Garden. This is a typical Swiss Alpine House style Chalet cuckoo clock made by Hönes.

This clock has a steeply slanted roof which is typical for Swiss Alpine houses.

It depicts a charming Chalet Alpine house with balconies and surrounded by trees and flowers.

These figurines are dancing and turning when the music plays. When buying cuckoo clocks, music and dancing figurines are definitely some features that I always look for. This cuckoo clock has a mechanical Regula movement. Regula and Hubert Herr are the only two cuckoo clock movement manufacturers in the Black Forest, Germany.

This 20-inch clock has an 8-day movement, which means, it needs to be wound once a week by pulling chains until the weights are up.

Hönes has maintained its reputation as one of the top quality cuckoo makers of the Black Forest because of its focus on quality craftsmanship and definitely has mastered the art of making quality cuckoo clocks.

German Beer Garden-Style Cuckoo Clock

Choosing the perfect cuckoo clock can be quite challenging because there are so many choices available on the market these days. Selecting the best one comes down to a matter of personal taste, so it is better to choose a clock that suits your style.

This battery-operated quartz cuckoo clock is made in Germany. It measures 11 inches, 8×10 inches  (without pendulum and weights). It depicts a typical Bavarian beer garden in Germany. Beer gardens are usually located near a brewery or pub. Biergartens (beer gardens) are an essential part of Bavarian culture and their origin goes back to a few hundred years.

This clock has intricate details made of solid wood. The cuckoo bird calls every hour and animates from behind its door. The plants and little flowers hanging on the windows are hand-painted.

The bell and roof are hand-carved and covered with wooden shingles. Everything you see is made of wood including the hands and dial.

This cuckoo clock shows a typical open-air establishment where beer is served in front of a brewery or pub. On the left, you can see a server and on the right is a drinker with a glass of beer in his left hand. Every hour, when the music plays, the drinker moves its hand and the wheel in front turns.

It has two pine cone-shaped weights and a pendulum which are also made of wood.

Although this clock has a quartz movement, the quality is as high as mechanical movements.

Here is an example of a cuckoo clock that has mechanical movement:

I find it more convenient than mechanical movements that require winding every 24 hours or seven days, but since it is powered by batteries, it doesn’t need to be wound.

I love traditional cuckoo clocks, especially chalet-themed ones as they depict the local culture and scenes of nature and meticulously made. In addition to the cuckoo call, music has always been an essential part of cuckoo clocks, so aside from the quality and style, when looking for a perfect cuckoo clock, I look for the night sound shut off feature. Music gives you a nice and lovely experience during the day but it could be unpleasant during the night.

Vintage Schatz Cuckoo Clock

Vintage Schatz Cuckoo ClockThe Schatz Clock Company aka Jahresuhrenfabrik from the Black Forest region of Triberg, Germany has a long and interesting history when it comes to making clocks. August Schatz and Anton Harder, founders of Schatz, worked together in the hope of making clocks that could accurately keep time with a minimum of winding or maintenance.

This 70-year-old hand-carved clock was made in the Black Forest region of Germany. The clock itself is handmade and the solid wood case is carved from aged Linden wood which exclusively grows in the Schwarzwald, Black Forest region.

It shows an intricately hand-carved bird perched on the very top and grape leaves on each side of the clock case. The hands and dial are hand-painted and also made of wood and you can see the original signature logo of the Schatz just above it.

A colorful wooden bird comes out from behind the little door and strikes every hour.

The weights are made of cast iron with a pine cone shape and the wooden pendulum which is in the shape of a leaf, which is consistent with its design.

Cuckoo clocks can either have three or two weights. A clock with three weights is musical. Here’s an example of a clock with three weights: https://clockreviewed.com/authentic-german-cuckoo-clock-from-regula/

This clock measures about 12 1/2 inches in height (without the weights and pendulum) and 9 inches in width. It is a mechanical 8-day movement clock which means it keeps time for approximately one week and must be wound only once a week as compared to a 1-day movement clock that needs to be wound every 24 hours. Therefore, I find this clock more convenient.

What makes this clock different from other clocks is the history that attaches to it and the decorative classic or traditional look with intricate details and woodwork completes the mood and look of your home.
